Managing a Company - Talent

10. Talent is a major issue. You either don't have any, or the ones you have will eventually leave.

9. A growing number of quality graduates have tied up their future with big GLCs or multi-nationals.

8. This trend coincides with the lack of enthusiasm for personal enterprise and entrepreneurship amongst quality graduates.

7. Why bother with growing a company when you can hop from one big company to another after just a couple of years?

6. These has resulted in a dearth of talented individuals brave enough to join a start-up or SME.

5. SMEs, like my company, are left with almost nothing from the talent pool when it comes to hiring our staffs. We scrape at the bottom of the barrel. We don't even think of getting those experienced folks from JobStreet. My talent pool lies in Mudah.com.my.

4. Although I do believe that street smart is as invaluable as book smarts, no amount of hard work and perseverance can mask incompetence. And a lot of people who failed in school generally fall into three categories : (a) low IQ (b) low motivation (c) social delinquent. Only some have managed to overcome these challenges.

3. The biggest issue we have is dealing with linear-thinking staffs. They work hard, they mean well, but they cannot and will never see the bigger picture. If A says A, then A it is, without thinking that maybe A has a problem with B and that C is more profitable for A.

2. It's not only about the money that we can offer. I can offer a fresh graduate the same amount he would get in a multinational, but we can't provide other hidden benefits like brand recognition, peer recognition and a social environment that's conducive for their own personal development and growth.

1. However, I have realized one thing. Street smart people can do 80% of what book smarts folks can give at only 40% the cost. In business, this is a crucial factor. Plus, they're more submissive, has less expectations, lower aspiration, and more likely to stay loyal.

I've always wished that this company is filled with me (talk about ego). But then again, I probably wouldn't enjoy managing people like me. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

totally agreed. i guess the issue lies with (1) education system that promotes breadth and not depth. Maximum As is always the best (2) non conducive environment for personal enterprise in msia ( non bumiputra cannot be a master franchisor in this country) (3)bumiputra prefers to work for the government while capable nonbumiputra wouldnt stay in this country

what do you think we can do as a nation to undo the situation?

dear tuan ceo & ncnb
my perspective on how to overcome lack of talent for sme in m'sia;
1.your company is good, as it was built on solid basis-award winning products& visionary owners & r&d.
but most sme did not really go out there to source the talent. you hv to md known your vision so that talent will come to find ya!
2. seriously, working in civil service, glc or multinationals doen't guarantee self satisfaction. to some graduates, we aint looking for money,or medical benifit of 1m.but we can not find or it's too risky to engage - like-minded friends to starts a compan, even if we hv knowledge & money. most sme doesnt convince us that we'll b given opportunities to develop our selves.
3.yes, agreed wif non capable non bumi, tat many malays in civil service, & talented ppl is giving it a thought to migrate...
so, it comes down to keberanian untuk mencuba, kesedaran, being @ d right time,@ d right place & suround yourself with successful ppl with good networks.@ least it aint going to be like a struggle uphill.

but how many agree with me? not even my family.it boils down to- does education prepares us to b a leader& thinker well beyond school & uni walls?the definition of success needs to b revisited by grads & society @ large.

Dear Joseph Woon,

I can tell it's you by the incessant whinging about race and politics.

It's getting a bit too much ain't it? How sad life must be to live life under the pretense that all is lost, there is no hope, and you are powerless.

Go get yourself a girlfriend, for heaven's sake. We all know you're just a volcano waiting to erupt:D

On that note, isnt the McD, Starbucks, 7 Eleven, Kenny Rogers franchise run by Berjaya Group, owned by Vincent Tan, or is he now a Bumiputera?

And what about Old Town, Bonia and many more local franchise owned and operated by non-Bumis?

It's getting embarrassing my friend.

Dear mr ceo,

Its simple.

But you need to make it really personal.

Share your dream - the single inner most thought of what you want to be. Not what you want to do.

It needs to be more than just your goal to grow the company.

It needs to be bigger. Way bigger.

And most importantly - not how - but, where do they eventually fall into this whole picturesque world if they headlessly follow you.

Sincerely,
Lord Shaper of the dreamworld.

P/s: only take this approach on someone you really know is capable. Its too powerful to resist.

I mean come on!

You dont get THE girl by buying her a ramli burger special.

You promise her the world!

Sincerely,
Lord shaper of the dreamworld,

P/s: a darker approach sebab tk pg jumaat. But the jist is the same

dear zmna,

i recalled with interest a book i previously read called Personality by Daniel Nettle

it describes the Big Five Personality traits to explore human behaviour + to offer some befitting explanations from the evolution perspective

Big Five Personality Traits:
(1) Openness
(2) Conscientiousness
(3) Extraversion
(4) Agreeableness
(5) Neuroticism

my point is your 'keberanian untuk mencuba' may stem from our cultural background of needing stability (as opposed to westerners who have gone through years of prosperity...)

thats why easterner tends to be more agreeable ( this can be traced back to our paddy field where we need absolute cooperation vs grain/ crop fields in the west that are operated individually). is it a surprise why asian is generally MORE hardworking throughout the year?

hence to further appreciate the different traits that make up each individual, and that NO SINGLE trait is considered more superior, but to consider them as a consequence of contextual force. and how the human population as a whole will swing the pendulum between the 2 opposing ends of each trait, as deemed necessary by the force of nature

Dear NCNB,

You're not Joseph? I could have sworn you were him, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on perspective.

So bro (or sis...),apologies for the volcano comment. But the rest remains valid (I knowwww...).

Anyway, about PNB's role and affirmative action policies, then it ain't limited to franchise rather the entire economic system, which is beyond your example, and perhaps too broad to cover in comments.

However, maybe these grants ain't all it's cracked up to be.Look where the Bumi entrepreneurs are after all these assistance and compare them to non-Bumi tycoons.

Sometimes there IS a flipside to everything.

Mr.No More Foreskin,

Really? Have YOU tried recruiting that way, or as I suspect, were YOU recruited that way and now disappointed and now ready to leave at first instance of a better opportunity? Hahahahahahahahhaha

Peace!

The latter one - that's my story alright.

which makes my suggestion even more interesting.

Con them, and then throw them out when they're too burnt.

the important part is to con them with your dream.

p/s: kalau tak dapat jugak, there's always your right or left or both hands (if you're ambidextrous) to help you unload stuff by yourself. hahaha

Peaceeeeeeeeeeeeee y'all!
